Cliff Dwellers Club Event June 24th at 6pm

After-words will be selling books June 24, 2014 from 6-7:30 pm at an event in the beautiful gallery at the Cliff Dwellers Club at 200 S. Michigan Avenue on the 22^nd floor.  This talk and exhibit is free and open to the public.  The talk will be by John Comazzi, author of Balthazar Korab: Architect of Photography.

The artist:

BALTHAZAR KORAB

Balthazar Korab was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1926 and began his architecture education at the Budapest Polytechnic in 1945, shortly after the end of the Second World War.  

Due largely to his published photography from his time in the Saarinen office, he began to receive numerous commissions from other architects and eventually opened an independent studio in 1958.  In 1964, after only five years in practice, he received the prestigious Gold Medal for the Photography of Architecture from the American Institute of Architects.  

Balthazar Korab’s photographs have been exhibited widely in prominent venues such as The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Detroit Institute of Arts, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Centre Canadian d’Architecture in Montreal, The Walker Art Center, The National Building Museum in Washington D.C. and The Venice Biennale.

INFLECTED MODERNISM: The Architecture Photography of Balthazar Korab

This exhibition has been assembled under the premise that architecture is re-created through photography, as photographers play a crucial role in the popular and critical dissemination and reception of architecture. While we (designers, educators, historians and consumers of architecture) often ascribe a calculated objectivity to the photographic images of architecture, it is undeniable that our interpretations of the original sources are inflected by the experiences, sensibilities and practices that photographers bring to bear on their subjects.  As such, this exhibition comprises a distinctive selection of photographs from the archive of Balthazar Korab, one the most prolific and celebrated photographers of mid-century Modern architecture in the twentieth century.

The speaker:

John Comazzi is an Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Minnesota where he teaches design studios and research seminars at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

Book event for Exploring Chicago Blues June 12th 6:30 PM

Rosalind Cummins-Yeates will be at After-Words books on June 12^th from 6:30 p.m.  There will be a short talk and then the author will be signing copies of her book Exploring Chicago Blues. Wine reception to follow.

Blues history is steeped in Chicago’s sidewalks; it floats out of its restaurants, airport lounges and department stores. It is a fundamental part of the city’s heritage that every resident should know and every visitor should be afraid to miss. Allow Rosalind Cummings-Yeates to take you inside the Checkerboard and Gerri’s Palm Tavern, where folks like Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon and Ma Rainey transformed Chicago into the blues mecca. Continue on to explore the contemporary blues scene and discover the best spots to hear the purest sounds of Sweet Home Chicago.

Rosalind Cummings-Yeates is a journalist and arts critic with the same Chicago and Mississippi roots that helped create the Chicago blues. She holds a BS in mass communications from Illinois State University and an MS in journalism from Roosevelt University. She writes a monthly blues column, “Sweet Home,” for the Illinois Entertainer. Her other publication credits include Hemispheres, MSN, Salon, Woman’s Day, Brides, Go Magazine, Yoga Journal, Relish, Home & Away, Chicago Reader, Allmusic.com, Chicago Sun Times and Mojo (where she interviewed Buddy Guy about his influence on Jimi Hendrix). She has also been an adjunct professor at Columbia College–Chicago for over ten years. Rosalind is a member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors and the Society of American Travel Writers.

Time is running out on the Romance sale!  This sale is only valid until April 30, 2014.

There is no limit on the number of free hardbacks (of equal or lesser value) you can get with your purchase of hardbacks on the romance aisle!

Quality (larger) and mass market (smaller) paperbacks will be limited to 5 per customer (again, freebies must be of equal or lesser value to the purchased volumes.

Also, to celebrate Shakespeare’s birthday, April 23^rd is World Book Night.  If you have time to come in today we still have boxes of books available for you to hand out in your community to light or non-readers.
